Marriage Compatibility Test
Research-informed plus the named traditions, conservative. An article that reports published research, not a diagnosis. Built on the couple quiz's research sources, plus the traditions each route describes, not on us.

A marriage compatibility test is any check a couple uses to see how well they fit for marriage. There are four kinds: a couple questionnaire (Research-informed), sun signs and birthdays (Tradition), kundli matching (Tradition, Vedic) and numerology (Tradition). Only the questionnaire asks about your actual relationship.
Marriage is one stage of relationship compatibility, and the research on couples applies to it in the same way. What changes are the stakes, and the number of traditions that offer a reading of them.
Of the four, only the couple quiz reads your relationship. The other three read birth data, and this site labels each of them as a tradition.
How do the four marriage compatibility checks compare?
The table puts the four side by side, with the date of birth tool on its own row because it blends two traditions.
| Route | What it reads | Label | What it can tell you | What it cannot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Couple questionnaire | Your answers, and your partner's, on 36 statements | Research-informed | How each of you rates nine areas, and where your answers differ | Whether the marriage will last |
| Sun signs | Your two sun signs | Tradition: Western astrology | How astrology reads the pair | Anything about the two of you as people |
| Date of birth | Two birth dates, read as sun signs plus life path numbers | Tradition: astrology plus numerology | Both traditions' readings side by side | Anything about the two of you as people |
| Kundli matching | Each partner's date, time and place of birth; the kootas read the Moon's position in each chart | Tradition: Vedic astrology | The guna total the tradition uses | Anything about the two of you as people; this site runs no kundli tool |
| Numerology | Two life path numbers and, in some readings, a wedding date | Tradition: numerology | One popular reading of the pair and the date | Anything about the two of you as people |
Every route after the first reads data fixed at birth, which is why none of them can see how two people treat each other.
Is there a compatibility test for married couples?
Yes. The couple quiz asks 36 statements across nine areas, among them communication, life goals, finances and trust. Each of you can take it alone, or one of you sends a link and the other answers on their own phone without seeing the first set of answers. It gives a score for each area and shows where your answers differ. It gives no verdict on the marriage, because the answers cannot carry one. The areas closest to the usual marriage questions are life goals, finances and conflict style, and a gap in any of them is a subject to talk about, not a score to pass. Because it asks about the relationship you already have, it is the only route here that can change when the two of you do.
Can you check marriage compatibility by date of birth?
Yes, as a tradition. The tool for compatibility by date of birth combines your two sun signs with your two life path numbers and shows both halves next to the combined result, so neither tradition hides behind the other. It reads the dates rather than the people, which is why it carries the Tradition label.
What does astrology say about marriage compatibility?
Astrology rates a pair of sun signs on three things: the aspect, or distance, between the two signs, how their elements relate, and whether their modalities differ. On this site's sign pages, the marriage reading looks at modality alone: a partner of another modality scores the modality point. Which pairs the tradition favours for a long marriage, sign by sign, is set out on zodiac marriage compatibility.
How does kundli matching check marriage compatibility?
Kundli matching scores eight kootas, weighted from 1 to 8, for a total of 36 gunas, and the tradition treats 18 or more as the pass mark for marriage. It reads both partners' birth charts, so it needs a date, a time and a place of birth for each. This site runs no kundli tool, and a Vedic astrologer has not yet reviewed these pages. The upper bands above 18 differ by a point or two between publishers, so 18 is the one figure they all share. In India, horoscope matching usually means this method; in the United States it usually means comparing sun signs. The method, koota by koota, is explained in kundli matching.
How does numerology check marriage compatibility?
Numerology compares the two partners' life path numbers, each reduced from a date of birth, and the tradition also reduces a wedding date to a single number. The grouping it uses to rate a pair is one popular reading, not the only one. Both readings are on numerology marriage compatibility. Marriage tests that work from two names are games on this site, and they are labelled that way.
Is there a real marriage compatibility test?
No test can tell you your marriage will last. The largest study of couples to date pooled 43 studies and 11,196 couples (Joel and colleagues, 2020). It found that change over time was largely unpredictable: nothing in people's answers said which relationships would improve or decline. John Gottman's laboratory studied which ways of arguing went with later divorce across groups of couples (Gottman and Levenson, 1992). That is a finding about patterns in groups, not a forecast for one couple.
What else is a marriage compatibility test called?
The same need travels under several names, and each maps onto one of the routes above.
- Check compatibility for marriage: usually a search for any of the four; the questionnaire is the only one that asks about the relationship.
- Marital compatibility test: the formal name for a questionnaire taken by a married or engaged couple, which is what the couple quiz is.
- Marriage compatibility calculator by date of birth: the birthday route, which reads two sun signs and two life path numbers from the dates.
- Marriage compatibility by name: a name game. The name compatibility test on this site is labelled as one.
Two rules of thumb also get called marriage tests. The 3-3-3 rule in marriage and the 7-7-7 rule are folk rules about time together, not tests, and the relationship compatibility page explains both.
