What is a name compatibility test?

A name compatibility test is a fun, lighthearted game: it turns the letters of two names into numbers and gives you a match percentage.

On this site it's a name compatibility calculator you run in your browser. It's free, there's no account, and it checks love compatibility by name and by nothing else. It doesn't ask for a birthday or a star sign.

This isn't the Love Calculator on our home page. That one counts the letters of TRUE LOVE. This one gives every letter a value from 1 to 9, so the same two names get two different numbers on the two pages.

How to take the name compatibility test

To take the name compatibility test, follow these four steps.

1. Type one name in each box. First names or full names both work, as long as you use the same kind for both people.
2. Press "Compare the name numbers".
3. Read the two name numbers under the score. Each name has been turned into one number from 1 to 9, or a master number.
4. Read your score and its band. The score comes from where those two numbers sit on our grid.

Your score is a percentage from a fixed table, so the same two names always get the same score, in either order. The table has a floor and a ceiling, so no pair of names gets 0 and no pair gets 100. The band under the score says how compatible the two names look in our game. That's what it means, and that's all it means. You can check every step yourself with the letter table below.

A few typing rules help. Accents fold to their base letter, so José and Jose get the same number. Spaces, hyphens and apostrophes are ignored. Titles are letters too, so leave them out. Names in other alphabets need their Latin spelling, and each name can be up to 60 characters.

How is name compatibility calculated?

Here's how name compatibility tests work, or at least how ours does, in three steps: letters become numbers, each name becomes one number, and the two numbers meet on a grid.

1. Both names are tidied the same way: accents fold to their base letter, everything becomes a capital, and anything that is not a letter from A to Z is dropped.
2. Each letter takes a number from the Pythagorean table: A, J and S are 1, B, K and T are 2, and so on to I and R at 9.
3. A name's numbers are added and the total is reduced by adding its digits. 11, 22 and 33 are kept and shown as 11/2, 22/4 and 33/6.
4. The two name numbers are looked up on a 9 by 9 grid. The grid is our own proposed table and is waiting for a numerologist's review.

Letters to numbers comes first. Every letter takes a value from 1 to 9 from the table numerologists call Pythagorean. The table follows the alphabet in rows of nine: A is 1, B is 2, up to I at 9, and then J starts again at 1.

Every letter has one value, and the table never changes.

Each name then becomes one number. The letter values are added up, then the digits of the total are added, again and again, until one digit is left. That digit is the name number, which some people call the name vibration. Our rule keeps 11, 22 and 33 when they come up. Numerologists call these master numbers. We show them as 11/2, 22/4 and 33/6, and we match them as 2, 4 and 6.

Last, the two name numbers are looked up on a 9 by 9 grid, the same grid our numerology compatibility calculator uses. The grid gives the score.

The grid is built on one popular grouping of the nine numbers, 1-5-7, 2-4-8 and 3-6-9, which treats numbers in the same group as natural matches. Not every numerologist uses that grouping, and some rate pairs number by number instead. Our grid uses the three groups. It is our own proposed table, and the methodology page marks it as proposed until a numerologist has reviewed it.

In plain words, the same number scores well. Two numbers from the same group score highest. Two numbers from different groups score lower, by how far apart they sit.

With the letter table and a pencil, you can do the first two steps by hand, and the grid gives you the third. Two names and a table are all it takes, which is why people bring it to the biggest pairing question there is.

Can you test name compatibility for marriage?

Yes, as a game. The test does the same sums whether the two names belong to a crush, a couple or two people about to marry. It reads letters, not plans.

A couple name match, or a couple compatibility test by name, is this same test with two names you already know well. People look for it before a wedding, often with the names they'll have afterwards. Try both spellings and you'll see the number move, because the letters changed. A name is a name, and yours was picked long before you two met. The formula hasn't met either of you.

Is a love test by name the same as a name compatibility test?

How does name compatibility differ from numerology by date of birth?

Name compatibility reads the letters of two names, and numerology by date of birth reads two birth dates. That's the first difference.

The second is what can change the result. A name can be spelled, shortened or changed, so this score moves with the spelling. A birth date doesn't change. The third is the label. This page is a Game. The numerology compatibility calculator follows the numerology tradition and carries a Tradition label.

Both use the same reduction to one digit and the same 9 by 9 grid. That's why the two pages agree on how two numbers are compared.
