What is a friendship calculator?

A friendship calculator takes two names and returns a friendship score from a fixed rule on the letters. Type both names and press the button. It is a Game. The same two names always get the same number, and that number cannot see a friendship.

Some sites run a friendship calculator on birth dates or on star signs. There is even a Pokemon friendship calculator, which has nothing to do with people. Ours reads two names and stops there. It's free and needs no account. It's the friendship version of the love calculator, which is the one to start with.

How do I calculate friendship compatibility?

Behind that button is a letter count, not a survey and not a personality test. The formula counts the letters of BEST and the letters of FRIENDS across your two names. It stops at 99, because the last step sets two single digits side by side. "How we calculate it" on this page walks through every step. You can run the whole thing on paper with a pen and a spare minute.

It's the rule the love calculator already runs, with BEST and FRIENDS swapped in for TRUE and LOVE. Different words, same counting. The two tools never hand you the same number for the same pair by accident.

Should you enter first names or full names in the friendship calculator?

Full names work best. More letters give the formula more to count. Two short first names leave it very little to work with. The score then tends to land low, for reasons that have nothing to do with the two people. We measured that: full names spread across all five bands, and first names clustered near the bottom. Nicknames work too. They're simply a different set of letters.

What does a friendship score mean?

A friendship score is a percentage a fixed rule produces from two names. It tells you what the letters did. It tells you nothing about the two of you. That is why every band here is written to be read out loud, without either of you feeling got at.

Two things about the ends of that scale. The top band is reachable. The round 100 is not, because the score is two single digits set side by side. A low band is a comment on your letters. A good friendship score is whichever one makes the two of you laugh.

What is a best friends compatibility test?

A best friends compatibility test is this calculator under a warmer name: two names in, one score out, one fixed rule in between. Nothing changes when the two people have been best friends for years rather than a fortnight. The formula only ever sees letters. It has no way of knowing how long you've known each other, and it never asks.

So the score reads the same for any two friends. The number people ask about most, though, is the one nobody gets here.

Can you get 100% on love calculator?

Not on this one. The friendship calculator sets two single digits side by side, so 99 is the ceiling and 100 is out of reach. Whether the Love Calculator can reach it is answered on the home page.

How we calculate it

  1. Both names are tidied the same way: accents fold to their base letter, everything becomes a capital, and anything that is not a letter from A to Z is dropped.
  2. The two names are joined, so the order you type them in never changes the score.
  3. Each letter of BEST is counted in the joined names and the four counts are added. The same is done for the seven letters of FRIENDS. E and S sit in both words, so each is counted under both.
  4. A total of 10 or more is reduced by adding its digits until one digit is left.
  5. The BEST digit and the FRIENDS digit are set side by side and read as a percentage, from 0 to 99.

Is the friendship calculator different from the love calculator?
Same rule, different words. Both count letters in two names and join two digits. This one counts BEST and FRIENDS while the love calculator counts TRUE and LOVE, so the two never hand you the same number for the same pair.
Does swapping the two names change the friendship score?
No. The two names are joined together before anything is counted, so the order you type them in makes no difference. Put either name in either box and the score comes out the same.
Is the friendship calculator accurate?
No, and it is not trying to be. It counts letters with a fixed rule, which is why the same two names always get the same score. It has never met either of you.
