Venus and Mars Sign Compatibility

Tradition. A tradition, not a forecast. Astrologers read it this way; the evidence does not.

Explained. This page explains Birth Chart Compatibility (Western astrology (synastry)).

By Suraj Giri · Updated

Venus sign compatibility compares how two people love, and Mars sign compatibility how they pursue; in synastry a Venus-Mars contact between two charts is the tradition's attraction contact, and one of the two this site's calculator weighs most.

From two birth dates, the birth chart compatibility calculator places Venus and Mars for both people and weighs every contact between them.

What is Venus sign compatibility?

Venus sign compatibility is the comparison of the sign Venus occupied in each person's birth chart. The tradition reads Venus as love, affection, harmony and beauty, so comparing two Venus signs is comparing how two people show affection and how they want to receive it. Venus love sign compatibility and Venus zodiac sign compatibility name the same comparison. It is one layer of synastry, the comparison of two whole charts.

It is a tradition, not a measurement. The best-known controlled test of astrology, published in Nature in 1985, found that astrologers could not match birth charts to personality profiles better than chance.

How does each Venus sign love?

Each row reads Venus through its sign's element and modality, so the table follows a rule you can check rather than a horoscope. Fire loves warmly and openly, earth through care and steadiness, air through talk and ideas, and water through closeness and feeling; cardinal signs make the first move, fixed signs stay constant, and mutable signs adapt.

Venus signElementModalityHow the tradition says it loves
Venus in AriesFireCardinalWarmly and openly, and quick to make the first move
Venus in TaurusEarthFixedThrough steady, practical care that lasts
Venus in GeminiAirMutableThrough talk and ideas, changing with the mood
Venus in CancerWaterCardinalThrough closeness and feeling, and by reaching out first
Venus in LeoFireFixedWarmly and openly, with affection that holds
Venus in VirgoEarthMutableThrough practical care, adjusted to what a partner needs
Venus in LibraAirCardinalThrough conversation, and by starting the approach
Venus in ScorpioWaterFixedThrough closeness that stays constant
Venus in SagittariusFireMutableWarmly and openly, with room to change
Venus in CapricornEarthCardinalThrough care and steadiness, and by taking the lead
Venus in AquariusAirFixedThrough ideas and talk, in a consistent way
Venus in PiscesWaterMutableThrough feeling and closeness, adapting to a partner

Why is your Venus sign always close to your Sun sign?

Seen from Earth, Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, so your Venus sign is always your Sun sign or one of the two signs on either side of it. We checked this on the site's own ephemeris for every day from 1900 to 2099: the widest gap was 47.27 degrees. Mars has no such limit.

What is Mars sign compatibility?

Mars sign compatibility is the comparison of the sign Mars occupied in each birth chart. The tradition reads Mars as energy, courage, strength and ambition, so comparing two Mars signs is comparing how two people go after what they want and how they handle friction. Unlike Venus, Mars can sit in any sign, whatever the Sun sign.

How does each Mars sign pursue?

The same rule applies: fire pursues directly and fast, earth patiently, air by persuading, and water by instinct; cardinal signs start, fixed signs persist, and mutable signs change tack.

Mars signElementModalityHow the tradition says it pursues
Mars in AriesFireCardinalDirectly and fast, and first to act
Mars in TaurusEarthFixedPatiently, and keeps going once it starts
Mars in GeminiAirMutableBy persuading, and changes tack easily
Mars in CancerWaterCardinalBy instinct, and moves first
Mars in LeoFireFixedDirectly, and persists until it gets there
Mars in VirgoEarthMutablePatiently, adjusting the plan as it goes
Mars in LibraAirCardinalBy persuading, and opens the approach
Mars in ScorpioWaterFixedBy instinct, and does not let go easily
Mars in SagittariusFireMutableDirectly and fast, changing direction freely
Mars in CapricornEarthCardinalPatiently, and takes the initiative
Mars in AquariusAirFixedBy persuading, and holds its position
Mars in PiscesWaterMutableBy instinct, adapting to the moment

What do Venus-Mars contacts between two charts mean?

One person's Venus in aspect to the other's Mars is the tradition's attraction contact: the way one person loves meeting the way the other pursues. This site's calculator puts it in its heaviest class, alongside Sun to Moon. What it does not cover is emotional closeness over time, which the tradition reads from the Moon and which is explained under emotional fit by moon placement.

Venus to Venus is what each person values in love, and the calculator puts it in the next class down. Mars to Mars is two drives meeting, and it counts as a supporting contact, the lowest class, not a heavy one. Because Venus and Mars are both personal planets, a square or an opposition between them counts as friction, and a conjunction, sextile or trine as warm.

For the sun-sign view of intimacy rather than the chart view, see zodiac sexual compatibility.

Is there a Venus and Mars compatibility calculator?

Yes. The birth chart calculator finds both planets for both people, lists every contact between them that falls within its tolerance, and weighs each one by the classes above. It serves as the Mars Venus compatibility calculator, the Venus sign compatibility calculator and the Venus love sign calculator all at once. A Moon to Venus contact is scored too, as a supporting contact. The calculator reads the contacts; it does not predict what two people will feel.

What does Venus in a chart mean for love?
In the tradition, Venus shows how a person gives and wants affection, and the sign it sits in colours that style: warm and open in fire, steady in earth, talkative in air, close and feeling in water.
Is Mars compatibility about sex?
Partly, in the tradition, but not only. Mars stands for energy, courage and ambition in every part of life, so two Mars signs also describe how two people handle ambition, pace and conflict.
