Rising Sign Compatibility (Sun, Moon and Rising)

Tradition. A tradition, not a forecast. Astrologers read it this way; the evidence does not.

Explained. This page explains Birth Chart Compatibility (Western astrology (synastry)).

By Suraj Giri · Updated

Rising sign compatibility reads the ascendant (how you come across) against the partner's chart, and the descendant, the sign opposite the ascendant, describes what each person seeks in a partner.

The synastry calculator on this site adds your rising sign when you give a birth time and a birth city, and leaves it out when you do not.

What is rising sign compatibility?

The ascendant, or rising sign, is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. The tradition reads it as how a person comes across: the first impression, the way they meet the world. Rising sign compatibility compares each person's ascendant with the other person's chart, their Sun, Moon and planets, rather than with a list of signs. It is one layer of synastry, the comparison of two whole charts.

A question such as a Scorpio rising love match reads the same way as any other rising sign: against the partner's whole chart, not against a fixed list of rising-sign matches. Like every reading here, it is a tradition, not a measurement. The best-known controlled test of astrology, published in Nature in 1985, found that astrologers could not match birth charts to personality profiles better than chance.

What is the descendant in astrology?

The descendant is the point exactly opposite the ascendant, on the western horizon, and it marks the start of the 7th house, which the tradition reads as partnership and marriage. So the descendant sign is always the sign opposite your rising sign: an Aries rising has a Libra descendant, a Taurus rising a Scorpio descendant, and so on around the wheel. Where the ascendant is read as what you present, the tradition reads the descendant as what you look for in a partner.

Do I need a birth time for my rising sign?

Yes, and a birth place. The rising sign changes about every two hours, and faster or slower depending on how far north or south you were born, so a guessed time can easily give the wrong sign. Near the poles the effect is extreme: inside the polar circles some degrees of the zodiac never rise at all, and the standard formula for the ascendant breaks down. That is why the calculator leaves the rising sign out, rather than guessing, when the time or the place is missing, and why it does not compute one for a birthplace inside the polar circles. Once you do have your rising sign, most people read it together with two others.

What is big 3 compatibility?

The big three are the Sun, the Moon and the rising sign. The tradition reads the Sun as the conscious self, the Moon as emotions, moods and instincts, and the rising sign as how a person comes across. Big 3 compatibility reads all three for both people together, rather than the Sun sign alone.

In practice that means six placements side by side: your Sun, Moon and rising, and your partner's. You look at how your Sun sits with their Moon and their Sun with your Moon, the contact the tradition calls its classic marriage contact. Then you look at how each rising sign sits with the other person's Sun and Moon. None of it gives a verdict on two people; it gives the tradition's vocabulary for talking about them. The next layer the tradition reads for love is Venus and Mars in synastry.

Can rising signs be compatible when Sun signs are not?

Yes, in the tradition. The two are read separately, so a low sun-sign rating and an easy contact with a rising sign can sit side by side on the same pair. The calculator does not add a rising-sign rating on top of the sun-sign rating; they are different methods, and neither decides anything about two people.

How does the birth chart calculator use the rising sign?

The birth chart calculator treats the rising sign as one more point in each chart, with three rules:

  • It needs a time and a city. It computes the ascendant only from a birth time and a birth city, and not for places inside the polar circles, where the standard formula breaks down.
  • It counts as a supporting contact. Each contact between one person's rising sign and the other person's planets sits in the calculator's lowest weight class, except a contact with Saturn, which takes the Saturn class.
  • It never guesses. With no birth time, the result lists the rising sign under what it left out. It lists only the ascendant; the descendant is always the opposite sign, so it needs no separate line.

The same calculator answers every rising sign compatibility calculator, ascendant compatibility calculator and big 3 compatibility calculator search on this site. With no birth time at all, compatibility by date of birth reads two birthdays instead.
