Zodiac Elements and Modalities: the Logic Behind Every Verdict
Tradition: Western astrology. A tradition, not a forecast. Astrologers read it this way; the evidence does not.
Explained. This page explains Zodiac Compatibility (Western astrology).

Element pairing rule: signs of the same element are the natural accord, fire with air and earth with water are the complementary pairs, and the other four pairings (fire with earth or water, air with earth or water) are read as the hardest in the tradition.
Every rating from the zodiac compatibility calculator is built from the rules on this page.
What is element compatibility in astrology?
Element compatibility is the tradition's reading of how two of its four elements combine when two sun signs meet. Western astrology sorts the twelve signs into fire, earth, air and water, three signs each, and reads a pair first by whether its two elements are the same, complementary or unpaired. Air signs zodiac compatibility, love zodiac signs compatibility and sun sign compatibility all rest on that first step. Your sign comes from your birth date, and each sign's page gives its date range.
This is a tradition, not a finding. Astrology is regarded as a pseudoscience, and the best-known controlled test, published in Nature in 1985, found that astrologers could not match birth charts to personality profiles better than chance.
What are the four zodiac elements?
- Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius. Read as drive and willpower.
- Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn. Read as practicality and caution.
- Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius. Read as communication and ideas.
- Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces. Read as emotion and sensitivity.
Four elements give ten possible pairings, and the tradition reads each one in one of three ways.
Which zodiac elements are compatible?
The table lists all ten pairings and how the rating reads each: the same element, a paired element or an unpaired one. For a single sign such as Libra, the rule reads directly. Libra is an air sign, so its easiest partners are the other air signs and then the fire signs, and the Libra page puts its partners in order.
| Elements | Relation | Element points | Aspects the two can form |
|---|---|---|---|
| fire and fire | same element | 2 of 2 | conjunction, trine |
| fire and earth | unpaired elements | 0 of 2 | semisextile, square, quincunx |
| fire and air | paired elements | 1 of 2 | sextile, opposition |
| fire and water | unpaired elements | 0 of 2 | semisextile, square, quincunx |
| earth and earth | same element | 2 of 2 | conjunction, trine |
| earth and air | unpaired elements | 0 of 2 | semisextile, square, quincunx |
| earth and water | paired elements | 1 of 2 | sextile, opposition |
| air and air | same element | 2 of 2 | conjunction, trine |
| air and water | unpaired elements | 0 of 2 | semisextile, square, quincunx |
| water and water | same element | 2 of 2 | conjunction, trine |
Are signs of the same element compatible?
Yes, in the tradition: it is the easiest reading of all. Two signs of one element are either the same sign or a trine apart, four places around the wheel. So air signs with air signs, earth with earth and water with water all share the element part of the rating in full.
Are air and fire signs compatible?
Yes, in the tradition. Air and fire are paired elements, so the element part adds to the rating, and an air sign and a fire sign always sit a sextile or an opposition apart.
Are earth and water signs compatible?
Yes, in the tradition. Earth and water are the other paired elements, with the same shape as air and fire: the element part adds to the rating, and the two signs sit a sextile or an opposition apart.
Are fire and water signs compatible?
Not easily, in the tradition. Fire and water are unpaired, so the element part adds nothing, and a fire sign and a water sign always sit a semisextile, a square or a quincunx apart. Fire with earth and air with water read exactly the same way. Element is one part of the rating; modality is the second.
How do modalities affect zodiac compatibility?
The three modalities sort the signs a second way, four signs each.
| Modality | Signs | Read as |
|---|---|---|
| Cardinal | Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn | Action and initiative |
| Fixed | Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius | Willpower and resistance to change |
| Mutable | Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces | Adaptability and flexibility |
Two different signs of the same modality always meet at a square or an opposition, the two aspects the tradition reads as tension. That is why the rating gives a point to any pair whose modalities differ.
What are the zodiac sign aspects?
An aspect is the angle two signs make on the zodiac wheel, counted in signs apart. There are seven.
| Aspect | Signs apart | Degrees | How it is read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conjunction | 0 | 0 | Blended |
| Semisextile | 1 | 30 | Adjustment |
| Sextile | 2 | 60 | Easy |
| Square | 3 | 90 | Tension |
| Trine | 4 | 120 | Easy |
| Quincunx (inconjunct) | 5 | 150 | Adjustment |
| Opposition | 6 | 180 | Tension |
Conjunction, sextile, square, trine and opposition are the five major aspects; the semisextile and the quincunx are minor. The easy, tension and blended readings are the ones Cafe Astrology gives. Reading the two minor aspects as adjustment is this site's own choice in its rating.
What is a trine?
A trine is two signs four places apart, 120 degrees, and it always joins two signs of the same element. The tradition reads it as the easiest aspect, a flow with nothing to push against.
What is a sextile in astrology?
A sextile is two signs two places apart, 60 degrees, and it always joins paired elements, fire with air or earth with water. The tradition reads it as easy and friendly.
What is a square in astrology?
A square is two signs three places apart, 90 degrees. It joins two signs of the same modality in unpaired elements, and the tradition reads it as friction: two signs pushing in the same way from different elements.
What is a quincunx in astrology?
A quincunx, also called an inconjunct, is two signs five places apart, 150 degrees. The two signs share neither element nor modality, and this site reads it as an aspect of adjustment. The widest angle of all is the opposition.
Are opposite signs compatible?
Often, in the tradition. Opposite signs sit six places apart, share a modality and pair fire with air or earth with water. So the tradition reads attraction with tension in it, and the rating puts opposites in the middle of its scale.
Opposites also share a polarity. The tradition calls the fire and air signs positive (active, yang) and the earth and water signs negative (passive, yin), so every paired element shares its polarity. The rating on this site does not use polarity.
Which planets rule each zodiac sign?
| Sign | Ruling planet |
|---|---|
| Aries | Mars |
| Taurus | Venus |
| Gemini | Mercury |
| Cancer | The Moon |
| Leo | The Sun |
| Virgo | Mercury |
| Libra | Venus |
| Scorpio | Pluto (traditionally Mars) |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter |
| Capricorn | Saturn |
| Aquarius | Uranus (traditionally Saturn) |
| Pisces | Neptune (traditionally Jupiter) |
Three signs carry two rulers because Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were discovered in 1781, 1846 and 1930, after the classical rulers were set. Rulers are read on each sign's page and each pair's page; the rating does not use them.
How do elements, modalities and aspects make a zodiac rating?
The rating adds the three parts in a fixed order, and the steps below state the rule exactly as the calculator applies it.
- The distance between the two signs on the wheel gives the aspect: the same sign, one sign apart, and so on to opposite signs. A trine scores 5, a conjunction, sextile or opposition 3, anything else 1.
- The elements are compared. The same element adds 2. Fire with air, or earth with water, adds 1.
- The modalities are compared. Different modalities add 1.
- The total, out of 8, sets the band. The points and the bands are our own table; the astrologer Jahben R. reviewed and approved them, unchanged, on 2026-09-23.
Every pair's result, for all twelve signs, is in the 12 x 12 zodiac chart.
