What is moon phase compatibility?
Moon phase compatibility takes the phase the moon was in on each of two birth dates and lays the two lit shapes over each other. The more of the circle they cover between them, the higher the score. It is a Game, and a circle is a shape rather than a verdict.
A moon phase is what the moon looked like on a date. A moon sign is a placement read from a chart, and that's emotional fit by moon placement.
How do you use the moon phase compatibility calculator?
Enter both birth dates and press "Overlay our moons". Three pictures come back: one moon for each date, then both lit parts on a single disc with the percentage under them. The overlay is drawn on the page; nothing downloads yet.
How does the moon phase compatibility trend work?
Moon phase compatibility works, in the trend version, by asking two people to look up the moon on each of their birthdays and put the two pictures together. A full circle is read as a match. How is the moon phase match percentage calculated?
The percentage is how much of the disc the two lit parts cover between them. Two phases that mirror each other leave nothing dark and reach 100, and two full moons reach it too, because each already covers the disc alone. Two new moons score 0, because neither has anything to lay over the other.
What does the moon phase overlap mean?
A high overlap means the two dates fell at opposite points of the same lunar cycle: one of you was born near a new moon, the other near a full one. That's a fact about two dates and nothing more. Soulmate is the word the trend borrowed, which the next question settles.

How we calculate it
- The phase of the moon on each birth date is worked out from a standard astronomical calculation, taken at noon UTC, so the tool never asks for a birth time or a place.
- Each moon is drawn with its lit part, the same way you would have seen it from Earth.
- Both lit parts are laid on one disc.
- The score is how much of the disc the two lit parts cover between them. Phases that are mirror images leave nothing dark and reach 100; two of the same thin crescent cover only that crescent.
- Because noon UTC is a few hours off the true instant of a phase, the picture is approximate, and the page says so.
