How does the Chinese zodiac assign an animal to a birth year?

The animal comes from the lunar year you were born in, and a lunar year begins at the lunar new year rather than on 1 January. That date moves, and across the whole table it never falls outside 21 January to 20 February. Only a birthday inside that window ever needs checking. The twelve animals then run in a fixed cycle, so the same animal comes round every twelve years and two people twelve years apart share one. All 108 rows match the Wikipedia years table, and 106 match Travel China Guide, which prints 1930 as 10 January where every other source gives 30 January. The one row read two ways is 1925: two references give 24 January and two give 25 January, and this table uses 24 January, when the new moon fell at 22:45 in Beijing.
